YOUMARES 3.0 "Between space and seafloor - aqua vita est"

The ttz is chair of the session: ALIENS FROM INNER SPACE: WHERE DO THEY COME FROM, WHAT DO THEY DO AND HOW CAN WE STOP THEM? On Friday, the 14th of September 2012.

In 2012 the German Society for Marine Research (DGM) will bestow for the second time the YOUMARES AWARD[1] which is addressed to students of all disciplines of marine research as well as high school seniors. On the occasion of the YOUMARES 2012 Conference "Between space and seafloor – Aqua vita est!" applications are solicited which address the following problems:

‚Water is life' is not only true in the biological context. From water life develops, but it also possesses extraordinary powers which may be utilized, for example, in tidal power plants and submarine turbines for electric power generation. 'Life' today also means quality of life. What would life be like in central Europe without maritime logistics and goods that reach destinations all around the world? With the goods, however, also uninvited guests reach far away regions. The invasion of foreign species due to ballast water discharges and its impact on the local species composition of flora and fauna has been a subject of scientific debate for some time. The approaches to tackle this complex problem are as varied as the conditions leading to the settlement of strange species in a new habitat.
We are looking for application-oriented examples of studies with an interdisciplinary approach to the problem, and which inform and stir the public's interest in a concise way and possibly also get it involved. Dispersion models of invasive species, ecological investigations and monitoring techniques for port facilities or technical solutions for the cleaning of ballast water are all equally valid angles of approach to the problem.
