Topics:

  • Short Rotation Plantations Irrigated with Wastewater: Suitable Species to Tackle Wood and Wastewater Treatment Scarcity in India
  • Melia Dubia - A Rather Unknown Tree Species with Great Potential for SRP

A Short Summary:

Although the treatment of wastewater by irrigating short rotation plantations offers solutions to several important Indian problems, it is not used in larger scales in India yet. In this work a pilot-scale short rotation plantation for the treatment of domestic wastewater in Nagpur, Maharashtra, was planned to prove the feasibility of this concept for India. Criteria for the selection of the most suitable tree species were developed and Melia dubia and Bambusa bambos were selected due to their high biomass production and good adaptation to the local conditions. Moreover the structural design of the plantation including the irrigation system as well as the management operations and a system for the monitoring of the effects on the environment were planned. The expected high wastewater treatment efficiency without significant negative effects on the environment implies that short rotation plantations can be a promising way of wastewater treatment in India. However, the results of the test operation have to be awaited. The identification of several suitable species adapted to different ecological conditions furthermore proves the transferability of the concept to other regions of India.
