Expertise

Our environmental expertise in detail:
Water Management
We meet the growing demand for a sustainable use of water with new approaches and strategies. Decentralized processes form the core of our work in the area of wastewater treatment and reutilization, e.g. through the use of biofilters, constructed wetlands, membrane technologies or solar distillation. We see wastewater as a valuable resource from which new, marketable products can evolve and with which the development of innovative technologies and demand-oriented concepts goes hand in hand.
Energy Management
We approach the current resource problem from two sides: On the one hand, we explore, develop and optimize technologies and concepts for the sustainable use of regenerative energy sources. On the other hand, we design strategies and measures for greater energy efficiency. In all measures, we attach importance to customized solutions which are adapted to local conditions. These are expressed in optimized energy utilization in buildings and greenhouses, process and plant optimization, as well as an effective use of residual materials.
Land Use Management
Successful landscape management is characterized above all by clear water, fertile soil, biodiversity and a balanced local climate. We achieve sustainable management with partners such as farmers and foresters, fish farmers or greenhouse operators, but we also develop solutions with the relevant political partners and NGOs which are economically attractive too. This includes the development of sustainable management methods and modules, training and communication strategies.
Biomass
With regard to regenerative energy sources, we believe in the first instance in biomass. This includes, amongst others, the extraction of biogas, bioethanol, wood chips and pellets from reproducible raw materials and residual organic materials. But a broader range of applications of solar energy and increasing operational safety in wind energy utilization are also part of our repertoire. With our research, consulting and training activities, we support not only industry throughout Germany and across the world, but also above all local authorities, associations and farmers, as well as ministries and international organizations.
Molecular Genetics
The Molecular Genetics Division (BIBIS) develops methods, amongst others for the area of environment, for the rapid and reliable detection of viruses, human-pathogenic germs and other contaminants and pathogens. These processes are used, for example, in wastewater treatment. In addition, scientists can detect, by means of variations, changes in genetic material and clearly identify which species is involved.
Using the PCR method (Polymerase Chain Reaction), tests can be carried out, for example, which make it possible to draw conclusions about a specific type of plant. This forms the basis for reliable identification or quality control.
Room air and environmental analysis
Using special environmental analytics, wastewater and sludge can be monitored. Plants are examined in terms of their usability for energy production. Our expertise in this field means we can offer optimum support in the operation of biogas plants. Room air analysis permits the detection of pollutants which can harm our wellbeing, for example in public buildings, at work, or in the home.
State-of-the-art analytical equipment and processes for the investigation of gases, liquids and solids are in use at ttz Bremerhaven. Raw materials for the manufacture of food or cosmetics are characterized and qualitatively assessed. Nutritional values, additives, trace elements, amino acid and sugar spectra can be reliably detected and quantified. Solubility, foam formation, anti-oxidative effect – techno-functional analyses make it possible to forecast the behaviour of an ingredient during or after processing. Storage and shelf-life tests allow precise predictions to be made and also raise consumer safety.
